Asian Outreach Impact Advocacy

At AOU, we know that empowering people goes hand-in-hand with empowering their communities. That’s why we work with Asian American groups, legal organizations and citizens to address issues that directly affect the lives of Asian Americans in Greater Boston – issues such as voting rights, domestic violence, and worker exploitation.

Giving Survivors of Domestic Violence a Chance

"Ms. Wang" photo

"Ms. Wang" and her husband were married in China in 2005 and have one child together. From the beginning of the relationship, her husband was abusive towards her. Ms. Wang did not speak English and they lived in a very isolated community in Indiana. In early 2009, after an argument, her husband threatened to kill her with the guns he owned. Ms. Wang sought the help of the local police and fled from her home.

AOU Community Partnerships

Workers Rights

AOU has a long-standing relationship with the Chinese Progressive Association’s (CPA) Workers Center.  AOU provides legal advice and representation, while CPA’s Workers Center provides organizing support to workers engaged in direct action campaigns. Together we help workers to obtain unpaid wages and improve their working conditions. We have advocated for legislation to address the rights of low wage immigrant workers at the state’s unemployment insurance offices.

AOU Direct Client Services

We assist and represent Asian immigrant clients in the areas of:

Asian Outreach

The Asian Outreach Unit (AOU) provides guidance, referral services and free legal assistance to nearly 1,000 low-income Asian immigrants each year. Our clients count on us for the most basic needs for themselves and their families. Our goal is to be a gateway to legal services and the legal system for all low-income Asians who rely on us.

Many of our clients speak very little – if any – English. Our staff speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, Toisanese and Vietnamese. We also hire interpreters for other Asian languages as needed to serve our clients.
