Legal Education and Outreach
Weekly Community Intake: Bilingual Unit staff conduct weekly intake in
two of the Boston area's most concentrated immigrant communities: the Latino community in Chelsea
and the Asian community in Boston's Chinatown. In addition, the Employment Unit
does intake on an as-needed basis at the Brazilian Workers' Center in East Boston and other sites to provide access to legal advice to other immigrant communities. Through this work, we are able to extend the scope of our work and increase access for workers in these linguistically isolated communities.
Workers' Rights Community Workshops: The Employment Unit regularly conducts workshops at community-based organizations and participates in community events to educate workers, community organizers, and social service providers about employment-related rights and benefits.
Training for the Private Bar: The Unit works to expand the availability of legal representation for our clients by providing training and coordinating pro bono advocacy programs for the private bar through partnerships with the Volunteer Lawyers Project and others including the Labor and Employment Section of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, and several individual private law firms.
