The Housing Unit strives, through full legal representation in eviction cases and through impact advocacy with tenant groups, to protect and preserve at-risk tenancies of low-income households in Boston. The factors creating this risk include:

(1) Lingering effects of the loss of rent control;

(2) The conversion of rental units into condominiums;

(3) Boston's skyrocketing rents now far exceeding the incomes of poor people, resulting in more than half of the Section 8 subsidy holders losing their vouchers (landlords either will not take the subsidies or refuse to renew voucher tenancies); and

(4) An ever increasing shortage of affordable housing, compounded by the loss of affordable units caused by expiring use restrictions due to pre-payment of subsidized mortgages and the non-renewal of subsidy contracts.
