Special Assistance for Victims of Domestic Violence
The GBLS Housing Unit staff are also the leading legal
specialists in the State of Massachusetts in assisting battered
women to gain access to and retain subsidized housing. The Unit
focuses on the specific barriers faced by battered women in gaining
such access to and retaining affordable housing resources. The Unit
has counseled and advised numerous individuals and agencies
city-wide. Our Housing and Family Law Unit staff, as well as our
Welfare & Employment and Immigration units have been working
jointly to bring about legal solutions to the problems faced by
women and children who have been victimized by domestic violence.
Through projects based in battered women’s shelters, as well as
systemic policy advocacy to prioritize battered women in public
housing, GBLS advocates have been an essential resource to enable
battered women to access housing, and begin the process of
rebuilding their lives.
