AOU Direct Client Services

We assist and represent Asian immigrant clients in the areas of:

  • Domestic and family violence.  We represent victims of domestic violence and help them to obtain restraining orders, divorce, child support and alimony payments and custody of minor children. We work with community partners to ensure that our clients get the shelter, counseling, and other support services that they need to live free of domestic violence.
  • Employment.  With the current recession, more Asian immigrant workers than ever find themselves unemployed or workings long hours for subminimum wages. By showing that they are unemployed through no fault of their own, we help low wage immigrant workers win unemployment insurance benefits. We prioritize groups of workers who have been cheated and advocate for their right to be paid a minimum wage and overtime.
  • Benefits.  With language barriers and complicated laws, many Asian immigrants don’t know how to access the public benefits they desperately need to feed, clothe, and shelter themselves and their children. We help US citizen children, elders, victims of domestic violence and the disabled obtain welfare benefits to which they are legally entitled.
  • Immigration.  We assist victims of domestic violence and of violent crime in obtaining legal immigration status. Many of our immigration clients entered this country legally, but because of complex immigration laws, their status has lapsed.  We help them file the appropriate paperwork with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services in order for them to get their green cards or US citizenship.
  • Housing.  Safe and affordable housing is the key to a family’s stability, and AOU ensures that tenants know their rights to prevent lock outs, illegal evictions and homelessness.
